Grading
Although no industry standard exists for hardwood flooring, most manufacturers have adopted a grading scheme based on the Canadian Lumbermen's Association standards for hardwood lumber.

Select & Better
The flooring will present slight visual defects, such as small sound knots no bigger than 3 mm (1/8") and mineral streaks. The colour should be uniform, although slight variation is allowed. The minimum length will be around 45 cm (18").

Pacific (also called Vogue)
The flooring will present more visual defects than Select & Better: larger sound knots, longer mineral streaks. The colour will have certain uniformity but variations will definitely be visible. The strips are shorter on average than Select & Better, with the minimum length being around 30 cm (12").

Colonial (also called #1 Common or Millrun)
The flooring will present all kinds of visual defects, such as knots, minerals streaks, etc. All colour variations are permitted. Strips can present slight checks and are much shorter on average (12'').

Tavern (also called 3-common or Rustic)
Open knots, any kind of visual defects, including missing wood on the base of the strip. In spite of these defects, the flooring should still be structurally sound once installed. Minimum length is around 9", although smaller strips will usually make their way into the bundle.
